“This book is a revision of Alan Jenks’ 1965 Harvard dissertation, which was produced under the direction of the late G. Ernest Wright. It argues for a tenth-century date for the Elohist and compares E’s theology and ideology to that of the Samuel tradition, the Elijah-Elisha cycles, Hosea, and Deuteronomy. … There is a great deal of hostility to traditional pentateuchal source criticism, and E has borne the brunt of it.… The major value of this study is its strenuous advocacy of the independence and coherence of E.
