Matera contends that, although he inherited earlier traditions, Mark is responsible for the present shape and form of the passion narrative. In composing the narrative, the Evangelist ordered his material so as to highlight the theme of kingship. Mark reserved the title “king” for chapter 15 in order to emphasize the distinctive nature of Jesus’ kingship.

“Since the cross of Jesus is of such obvious importance to Christian belief and to Mark’s Gospel, this clearly written and cogently argued work is of significance both for New Testament specialists and theologians.”
— John R. Donahue, Journal of the American Academy of Religion

“Like many predecessors, Matera has attempted to unravel the mysteries of Mark’s composition, and by his skillful literary analysis of chapter 15 he has succeeded in brightening our darkness. ”
— Robert Smith, Interpretation
