This DVD offers a useful film companion and supplement to the SBL’s popular Psalms in Community: Jewish and Christian Textual, Liturgical, and Artistic Traditions. Much of the Joyful Noise DVD was shot on location around New Haven, Connecticut, during the conference “Up with a Shout,” held at Yale University in 2001. The film introduces a number of congregations and secular choral communities that are deeply engaged with psalmody in a variety of styles, from shape-note to Taizé, and relates directly to the many subjects treated in the Psalms in Community volume. The scholars, performers, choirs, and congregations involved in the book and the film have prepared a feast of psalmody, inviting teachers and students, classrooms and congregations, to learn more about the shared songbook of two great faith traditions.
